Transforming Digital Storytelling with the infusion of 21st Century Skills

J. Bryers, j. Berthelot, J. Salikin

MicroBlogging: using Techy Teacher – allowing for 140 characters, they ask students to use their real names, be on topic, be respectful, and reflect on connections they have made. The students use the back channel to share information and help those that need more support.

todaymeet.com/transforming – they will have all the resources here for the next week. Place to talk through chat about the conference. If you need copy of the discussion they will safe them into a word documents.

The teacher has use to be the one with all the knowledge. Now we have smartboards, we need to focus on transforming the learning. Classroom are starting to look differently through pods and groups.

Polleverywhere – is a website that you use texting  or website to poll and vote on different things discussed in the classroom. You don’t type in the answer you just text in a number. This is a great way to get quick feedback .

You want students to transform their learning and become producers of their learning.

Storytelling

Poems –

  • Students use their own written poems
  • Take their own pictures of nature
  • Make their own background music
  • Need to have preproduction of knowledge (poem writing)
  • Give student choice on what kind of poem they want to write

Question/Information

  • students give the facts
  • explain why they like this topic
  • make sure the students are not answering a yes or no question, that the question is critical thinking questions

Instead of playing with technology we need to think of how this is working and integrating with the curriculum.

Digital Story –  Debate, option on specific topic (ie Slavery)

  • why they think it is wrong
  • give proof
  • read out letters, videos for support
  • use of pictures, write script, students drawings
  • facts, letters, time-line
  • students view on what others can do to make a change
  • student voice and view
  • give credits at end
  • must use copyright free songs, video and images
